Investing in One Health
STAR IDAZ IRC held a One Health funding workshop on 12-13th March 2025 in Nairobi, Kenya. The event built on the excellent work of the One Health Working Group to date, including a survey, a series of workshops and the Mapping One Health: An exploration of the global funding landscape for One Health research report.
The aim of the workshop was to identify challenges to funding research and implementation with a One Health approach and then co-develop solutions to address these challenges. We brought together a diverse group, researchers, funders, programme owners, resource partners, and other relevant stakeholders, from a wide range of sectors, disciplines and organisational types. This included animal health professionals, human health professionals, plant health scientists, environmental scientists, representatives from all four Quadripartite organisations, One Health High-Level Expert Panel (OHHLEP) members, social scientists and an engineer. Participants expertise and experience covered academia, the public sector, banks, philanthropic foundations, charities, regional and international organisations. Private sector representatives were also invited but unfortunately unable to attend. Participants worked hard to co-develop practical, feasible and sustainable solutions to the challenges they identified. The outputs of the workshop will influence funders, programme owners and researchers to help improve funding mechanisms for projects that embed a One Health approach. STAR IDAZ IRC would like to thank all presenters and participants for their engagement and rich discussions, as well as the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), for kindly hosting the workshop at their Nairobi campus. A workshop report will be available soon.
