INTA Argentina and USDA Co-Funded Projects
In a powerful collaboration that underscores the global commitment to advancing animal health, INTA Argentina and the USDA have co-funded five significant research projects aligned with STAR IDAZ priority areas. These projects, with a combined funding of $600,000, focus on critical aspects of animal disease research, particularly around Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus (FMDV) and other foreign animal diseases. The information below was provided as an update from one of our STAR IDAZ partners in a 2022 STAR IDAZ presentation.
Key Areas of Focus
These co-funded projects address several critical research areas:
- Understanding Cross-Reactive Responses through Vaccine Strains: This research explores how different vaccine strains interact to trigger cross-reactive immune responses, aiming to enhance the efficacy of vaccines
- Understanding Local and Systemic Protective Responses Against FMDV Infection: This project delves into the immune responses at both the local and systemic levels, providing insights into how FMDV infections can be effectively managed and prevented.
- Foreign Animal Disease Diagnostics, Surveillance, Control, and Eradication: Focusing on the tools and strategies needed for the early detection and management of foreign animal diseases, this research is vital for global biosecurity.
- In Vitro Evaluation of the Capacity of FMDV to Initiate T-Independent Humoral Responses: This study investigates the ability of FMDV to trigger immune responses without the assistance of T-cells, a crucial area for understanding and controlling the virus.
- Role of Local and Systemic Immunity in Protection: A deeper understanding of how local and systemic immunity contributes to the protection against diseases, helping to inform better vaccine strategies.
Strategic Impact and Future Outlook
These projects, highlighted in a 2022 STAR-IDAZ presentation, exemplify the impact of international collaboration on global animal health. The ongoing research, such as the USDA project on FMDV immune responses linked here, is not just advancing scientific knowledge but also contributing to the development of effective diagnostic, preventive, and control measures for animal diseases. By pooling resources and expertise, STAR-IDAZ and its partners are making strides in the fight against animal diseases, safeguarding both animal and human health.
