STAR IDAZ Approach

The risk of emergence of pathogens has increased as a consequence of global changes in the way food is produced, moved and consumed. Rapid detection and response to emerging diseases are critical to animal agriculture because these diseases threaten the livelihood of producers. Rapid and effective response can also prevent or limit negative impacts on animal health, the economy, food security, and public health.

STAR-IDAZ recognises there are many initiatives and projects focused specifically on emerging issues and diseases. Our work focuses on encouraging and facilitating further coordination and collaboration between those initiatives working in the area and between the STAR-IDAZ IRC partners.

Working group

In June 2020, STAR-IDAZ IRC hosted a global webinar on ‘PANDEMIC! A One Health View of Emerging Infectious Diseases’, in collaboration with the European Animal Health and Welfare Research Collaborative Working Group (CWG-AHW). The webinar presented lessons learnt from the COVID-19 pandemic and aimed to investigate the role of veterinary sciences in coping with and preventing future animal and zoonotic pandemics. The PANDEMIC! A One Health View on Emerging Infectious Diseases webinar report summarises the meeting outcomes, outlining identified research needs and policy recommendations.

STAR-IDAZ IRC brought together initiatives, projects and networks working on emerging issues with an international and veterinary research focus at a series of webinars from June 2021 to March 2022. The webinars aimed to better understand existing collaborations and discuss how STAR-IDAZ IRC can assist in encourage further coordination and collaboration in this area.”
